Bio
Kari Blak is an American fine artist, public muralist, illustrator, and designer born on the south side of Chicago, whose artistry concentrates on socioeconomic and environmental issues. Through colorful, illustrative imagery he employs a variety of styles from graphic to realistic. Kari often juxtaposes conceptual ideas of social justice with a refreshingly optimistic aesthetic. He has worked with Mural Moves studio for the past 5 years as a lead designer and lead artist painting public and private murals throughout Chicago. Influenced by a deep appreciation for French and Japanese animation, as well as the Saturday morning cartoons that fueled his creativity in youth. Kari has crafted captivating illustrations for six books, carrying the visual storytelling of children’s books, graphic novels and short stories. He has also provided design services for companies such as Mariano’s, Whole food’s and many others.
Artist Statement
Artist Kari Blak is committed to reshaping the world through vibrant colors and forging connections between art and activism. His diverse studio practice includes fine art painting, public/private murals, children’s book illustrations, graphic design, and arts education. With a focus on addressing current socio-political issues, environmentalism, Afrofuturism, and color theory, Kari’s work is both thought provoking and visually striking. As a pivotal member and lead designer at Mural Moves Studio, he has adorned numerous neighborhoods across Chicago with breathtaking murals. Kari is dedicated to empowering a new generation of black and brown cultural leaders in Chicago’s south and west sides.

Ferrara Candy Company -Lead Designer/ Muralist
Nov 2023 - May 2023, Commissioned concept mural for Ferrara Candy Companies offices at The Old Chicago Main Post Office. Designed around the theme of collaboration we worked with the company executives and employees to make a detailed illustration of how different departments in the company work together to make their product. Using bright colors, references to the candy-making equipment, and specific candies we brought to life a welcoming mural that reflected the diversity in the staff.
Columbia College -Mural Co-Designer June 2023 - July 2023, Commissioned mural for Columbia College inspired by Women's History Month titled “I am speaking”. Co-designed with artist Dorian Sylvain and painted downtown Chicago in the historic Wabash Arts Corridor.
Mahalia Jackson Court (DCASE) -Mural Designer
Aug 2022 - Sept 2022, Two murals were commissioned for the Mahalia Jackson Court through the Invest South West program. Dedicated to the life and history of Mahalia Jackson these murals illustrate her connection to Chicago and her journey through music. Located in the Auburn Gresham Neighborhood alongside sculptures and other public art.
Wholefoods Gold Coast -Lead Designer/ Muralist
March 2022 - May 2022, Two commissioned murals for Wholefood's new Gold Coast location, theme around Chicago’s famous downtown architecture. Using an assortment of classical Victorian references I collaged together two different designs that reflected the detail and subtle beauty of the builds that make Chicago. Through a blend of grays, earth tones, bright colors, and bold shapes we bring the structural designs to life.
Go Green Community Fresh Market -Designer/ Muralist
Jan 2022 - March 2022, Mural and 3 canvas paintings commissioned for the Go Green Community Fresh Market grocery store by the Iman Organization. The mural’s themes reflected fresh produce, community, and family using bright colors with a clean aesthetic. The canvas paintings show a group of young men farming together and a grandmother teaching her granddaughter how to cook.
Bmore Licks (Baltimore, Maryland) -Muralist Sept 2022, Commissioned mural for Bmore Licks ice cream shop in Baltimore, Painted alongside two artists the mural depicts seven large ice cream cones in varying bright pastel colors. Using a 70s pop art aesthetic brings the corner of the street to life attracting customers.
Invest South West (Auburn Gresham) -Muralist July 2022 - Sept 2022, Commissioned mural for Auburn Gresham neighborhood by DCASE, The design showed a large sunflower, and sunshine rays on top of African patterns.

Hyde Park Art Center BLM -Muralist Aug 2020, Commissioned by a local art center to produce a 9 by 9-foot mural centered around the theme of Black Lives Matter and collective unity.
MacArthur Foundation Mural -Illustrator Jul 2020 - Aug 2020, Digitally illustrated 8 portraits (DIMENSIONS) that will be incorporated into a larger mural and transferred to plywood boards with latex paint. Hyde Park Art Center COVID-19 Mural Donation - Muralist
April 2020 - May 2020, Designed a (50’ x 20’) mural around the idea of COVID-19 awareness in the community. Led and donated the mural to the Hyde Park Art Center in the wake of the stay-at-home orders. Latex paint on brick. 5020 S. Cornell Ave.
Mariano’s West Loop Cafe -Muralist Feb 2020, Commissioned murals designed and co-painted the upstairs cafe and bar area (6’ x 24’) in preparation for creative and culinary classes open to the public. Latex paint on plaster and steel beams. 40 S. Halsted St.
NattyBwoy Chicago -Creative Director Oct 2020, Co-founded and creative directed the vision of the brand, through logo design, merchandising, digital, print, sign painting, and retail location.
Mariano’s Bronzeville -Muralist Co-designed Sept 2019 - Nov 2019, digitally illustrated and painted the mural (150’ x 30’) layout. Led a team of 7 young artists to project and transfer the mural design to scale. Used scaffolding and electronic scissor lift to paint. Painted layout of patterns on the second mural for the public to participate.
